Wheels to Work ‘what a success’

Published Tuesday, 24th February 2015

The Council is celebrating the successful completion of the latest Wheels 2 Work programme on Friday 27th February 2015 at their offices at Parkside.

This Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) 1 programme was based in the North West Leicestershire and Charnwood areas of the county managed and coordinated by Melton Borough Council. It is also an opportunity to hear about the launch of the LSTF 2 Wheels 2 Work programme which is focused in the Hinckley area and due to start in April of this year and also the start of the DWP Wheels 2 Work which has recently been increased to cover Melton Mowbray as well as the original Hinckley and Market Harborough area.

The whole Wheels 2 Work in Leicestershire and Rutland has been a successful programme ran and managed by Melton Borough Council since its start in 2006, the scheme started off with just 8 mopeds covering the Melton and Rutland area, over the course of the last few years the scheme has grown in size with a current fleet of over 170 vehicles ranging from electric bicycles to 125cc scooters and now covers the whole of Leicestershire and Rutland.

The scheme was awarded LSTF funding in September 2012, the LSTF 1 programme is due to finish at the end of this April having helped in excess of 250 people access employment and education who would otherwise have been unlikely to have been able to do so.

The W2W LSTF 2 scheme, based from Melton is starting this April and is focused in the Hinckley areal, but will continue to provide further support throughout the County.

Cllr Pam Posnett, Deputy Leader of Melton Borough Council said ‘it’s absolutely fantastic that we have been able to help so many people, if this scheme was not available they would not have been able to keep their jobs or go on any training’

She continued to say ‘we are proud that this scheme has been so successful and very pleased that Sir Alan Duncan is able to attend this event on Friday and join in the celebrations’

The DWP flexible Support Fund was awarded to W2W last autumn to provide scooters for residents in the Hinckley and Market Harborough areas, from the beginning of February this has included residents from the Melton area and currently we have one person already benefiting from this with a further 4 who have applied for the scheme from Melton
