First Council housing building in nearly 30 years completedPublished Tuesday, 17th March 2015
Melton Borough Council is very pleased to confirm that their New Affordable Housing Project has been completed on time and within budget.
10 affordable new homes have been built on 3 previous garage sites in Greaves Avenue and Tudor Hill in Melton Mowbray and Saxelby Road, Asfordby. The garage sites were previously underused and in some cases derelict, new housing on these sites will help regenerate the area and provide much needed affordable housing.
Melton Borough Council has taken the opportunities provided from the Housing Revenue Account reforms and made use of New Homes Bonus monies to fund the project. Leicestershire County Council has also significantly contributed to the project through their new Homes Bonus scheme.
Councillor David Wright, Chair of the Council’s Community & Social Affairs Committee said “This is a memorable occasion for Melton Borough Council, we have not built new homes for nearly 30 years, we need to do more of these type projects, I will be continuing to push for more schemes to be developed by using under utilised land and other housing assets”.
Councillor Wright continued to say “There is a clear shortage of affordable housing in the borough and this and future projects will help meet some of the demand and we will continue to work with our partners in delivering more regeneration schemes”.
The Council is working with Faithful Gould (acting as Project Managers) on the project and secured G F Tomlinson Building for the main build contract.
Nick Banks, Construction Director at G F Tomlinson said: “We are delighted to be helping the council to deliver affordable new homes in Melton. This is a scheme which will make a genuine difference to people’s lives – helping residents to be in their own homes who may otherwise have not been able to do so.”
G F Tomlinson has vast experience in delivering construction projects for local authorities, including work in the housing sector. Our expertise will ensure we work collaboratively with all stakeholders involved to deliver a high quality scheme that benefits the local community of Melton.”
