Our position on climate change

In 2019 we declared a climate emergency, whereby we recognised the magnitude of the issue and, as a Local Authority, the role we must play in tackling climate change.

As a result, Priority 4 of our Corporate Strategy 2020-2024, sets out our ambition for our own operations and functions to be carbon neutral by 2030, and to promote sustainability within the borough, with the aim that the borough will be carbon neutral by 2050.

Current Projects and Actions

A Climate Change Working Group was formed between Councillors and officers and chaired by the Portfolio Holder for Climate, Access and Engagement, Cllr Freer. The group meet quarterly to discuss and progress the Councils climate agenda and projects.

Since 2019 we have been working on a series of projects to begin reducing our emissions and to understand our future aims and targets, these include:

  • Working with APSE Energy to produce a baseline study of the emissions generated by our own operations, which will inform the our reduction targets and action plan.
  • Working in partnership with Leicestershire authorities to implement electrical vehicles charging hubs in council owned car parks
  • We are currently working with energy experts YES Energy Solutions providing advice and guidance to residents wishing to apply for funding for installing solar panels.
  • We have secured £340,000 in grant funding to improve the energy efficiency of our own housing stock through the government’s Green Homes Local Authority Delivery scheme
  • We are currently facilitating the delivery Local Authority Delivery scheme (LAD 2) whereby low-income households could apply for funds to improve the energy efficiency of their home.
  • We have changed some of our in-house operations to reduce the amount of waste is produced, especially paper waste.

Next steps

In February we launched our initial consultation survey to gain the views of various stakeholders within the Melton borough. This will allow us to understand their views on climate change and how they want us to work with them in the future.

The survey is now closed, and we are currently considering the responses and will update this page with the feedback in due course.

Feedback from the survey will help shape and influence what the council does and how it will engage and work together with local people in the future. It will also help the council to develop a Climate Change Strategy, a longer term plan to set out how the council will meet its climate and environmental ambitions.

We will continue to work with partners to achieve our climate goals and also create new partnerships and networks to ensure that we can help the Melton borough become net zero.
