Melton is a vibrant market town with an abundance of specialist independent retail, tasty bistro’s and cafes, local producers and markets which can be dated back to the 1086 Domesday Book. The town offers a truly unique shopping experience.
The Cattle & Sheep Market, held every Tuesday, is one of the largest and most successful remaining market in England. A wide variety of livestock is auctioned and a visit to the main auction sales ring is an experience not to be missed. The Fur & Feather auction, held on Tuesdays and the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, can sell anything from parrots, peacocks, and Rhode Island Red Chickens to rabbits and pets. It is no wonder it carries a national reputation for the range and excellence of livestock available.
Melton’s Farmers market was the first of its kind in the region, focusing exclusively on the promotion of local businesses and providing a diverse range of specialist produce, including locally farmed Bison, Goat & Ostrich meat. Held at the Cattle Market every Tuesday and Friday morning.
Come and visit one of the Country’s oldest and finest markets. Every Tuesday and Saturday you can experience the hustle and bustle of the town’s busy street market. Based around the Market Place in the safe pedestrianised area of the town, the streets are filled with stalls selling everything from clothing to fresh produce.
Special Interest Markets
Tuesday at the Cattle Market is also the day of the Antique & Collectors Fair where there is always an extensive array of antiquities on display. Every Wednesday shoppers can hunt for bargains at the Antique / Bric-a-brac Market in the Market Place and on the first Wednesday of each month the Cattle Market runs an evening Tack & Sundries Auction where you can grab some affordable equestrian supplies. The Sunday Car Boot Sale is the biggest in the area attracting over 3000 buyers.
Christmas markets are extremely popular with the Victorian Christmas Market attracting thousands of visitors from all over the country.
