Melton Borough Council is seeking the views of local communities on the design of new development.

Published Tuesday, 7th January 2020

The Council is planning to hold a series of public engagement events across Melton Borough to assist in the development of a new planning document.

The document is intended to raise the standard of design for new developments.

The Council is asking local communities to help them develop the detail of the upcoming Design of New Development Supplementary Planning Document. This is an opportunity for local people to tell us about the places where they live and what makes them special, as well as what they think are the most important design considerations for new developments in their area.

The Design of New Development Supplementary Planning Document will set out how new development can be designed to successfully fit into its setting, and reflect local character. It will also cover a wide range of practical design issues such as providing sufficient parking, waste and recycling facilities and guidance to help developers achieve higher environmental standards, including addressing climate change and enhancing habitats and biodiversity.

Cllr Leigh Higgins, the portfolio holder for Growth and Prosperity said, “This is a great opportunity to guide the future image of local places and contribute to the prosperity and attractiveness of Melton Borough as a place to live, work and visit, now and in the future”.

The planned events are drop-in sessions that will run from 4pm until 8pm, everyone is invited to come along and people are welcome to stay for as little or as long as they wish. People who attend will have the opportunity to learn more about the new document, give their views on design matters in their area and speak with Council officers. They can also meet the professional urban design expert who is helping them to develop the new planning document.

The drop-in events will be held between Tuesday 14th and Friday 17th January as follows:

Tuesday 14 January 4:30-8pm Somerby Memorial Hall

Wednesday 15th January 4pm-8pm Waltham-on-the-Wolds Village Hall

Thursday 16th January 4pm - 8pm Old Dalby Village Hall

Friday 17th January 4pm - 8pm Melton Borough Council Parkside Offices, Melton Mowbray

Those who cannot attend are invited to contact the council directly, either online at, via email to or over the phone on 01664 502 322.
