Following approval from Cabinet last Wednesday, Melton Borough Council is inviting residents to take part in its public consultation on the Developer Contributions supplementary planning document (SPD) which will shape how the council secure funds for infrastructure across the borough.

The document is intended to provide more guidance to developers and stakeholders involved in providing developer contributions. It outlines the expectations the council will make to ensure developers who build in our borough, make a positive impact on local communities.

Joe Orson, Leader of the Council said: “Developer contributions are such an integral part of supporting the growth of the borough, ensuring that, through growth, Melton remains a great place to live. The publication of the draft Developer Contributions supplementary planning document continues to show Melton Borough Council’s commitment in supporting Leicestershire County Council in the implementation of vital infrastructure such as the much-needed distributor road, extending schools and building new schools. This document also supports the aspiration to accept the Housing Infrastructure Fund grant for the south leg of the bypass.

This is a key opportunity for residents across the borough to provide feedback on how the council will fund relevant infrastructure to support the future growth of the borough. Therefore, I would encourage people to engage with us during this consultation.”

This supplementary planning document will ensure that the needs and services required to maintain Melton as a great place to live, work and invest are obtained through developer contributions. Whether this is through funding the bypass, the implementation of open spaces, improvements in health and leisure facilities or through the continued partnership with Leicestershire County Council who provide services in education, waste and highways.

The document will illustrate the council’s commitment to support Leicestershire County Council in reclaiming funds for the town’s essential infrastructure, such as the Melton Mowbray Distributor Road (more commonly known as ‘the Melton bypass’) and new schools.

This consultation provides an opportunity for residents and stakeholders to provide the council with feedback on the procedures and priorities laid out within the document. All comments and feedback on the draft document will be taken into consideration when producing the final version of the SPD.

Three drop-in consultation events will take place via Zoom during the consultation period. The events will give the opportunity to those that have read the document to pose questions to the officers involved in the production of the Developer Contributions SPD.
