Draft Housing Strategy consultation launched

Draft Housing Strategy Priorities

Melton Borough Council is asking for your views to help them develop a new Housing Strategy which will set out local housing priorities and influence the borough’s housing ambitions and goals for the future. The Strategy aims to provide a clear strategic direction for both the planning and delivery of housing provision and services in the area.

Through the strategy the council wants to set out how it will play a proactive role both directly as a landlord and delivering new homes, but also by indirectly influencing and working with a range of partners to ensure that people of all stages of life can live well in a good quality home which they can afford.

The six-week consultation will allow local people to have their say on the draft strategy, which sets out local housing challenges and how we might collectively tackle them. It proposes four key priorities: delivering housing growth, better quality homes, supporting people and responding to the climate emergency.

Cllr Leigh Higgins, Deputy Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Growth and Prosperity said; “A safe and settled home is the cornerstone on which individuals and families can build a better quality of life. The draft housing strategy sets out our ambitions to deliver high quality homes for all, to meet the housing needs of our growing and aging population and provide the right types of housing in the right places to meet local people’s needs, including support for local people who want to own their own home. The draft housing strategy also recognises how housing can help to support our broader goals around health and wellbeing, economic growth and prosperity and climate change. The draft housing strategy is intended to stimulate discussions with stakeholders and the local community, and we welcome feedback on it.”

Cllr Ronan Browne, portfolio holder for Council Homes and Landlord Services said. “Local house prices and rents continue to outstrip rises in local incomes and many families are finding it harder to find somewhere affordable to live. The housing strategy recognises the importance of affordable housing including the council’s housing stock. It will help to shape how the council manages its homes and it reflects our commitment to improve the quality of our council housing as well as reduce carbon emissions and energy costs for our tenants. I encourage people to have their say and respond to this important consultation, so the final strategy reflects what is important to local people.”
