The Windrush Flag is flying proudly in Melton

Melton Borough Council will join the NHS and hundreds of local authorities, universities, and other organisations in flying a special flag to mark Windrush Day on 22 June.

Windrush Day was first launched in 2018 and provides an opportunity for communities across the UK to come together and celebrate the contribution of the Windrush Generation and their descendants to Britain.

This Windrush generation, subsequent migrants from around the commonwealth and their descendants have made a significant and lasting contribution to our nation’s cultural, social and economic life. Arriving in the UK shortly after the Second World War the Windrush Generation, who came predominantly from the Caribbean, played a huge part in helping to rebuild our country in the post-war era. As part of supporting Britain at this time, they quickly gained employment in areas such as the NHS, public transport and the production industry helping to produce steel, coal, iron, and food for the country.

This year’s Windrush Day is particularly special as it marks 75 years since the HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks.

The Flag will be flying outside of the Parkside Offices from Thursday 22 June as a symbol of our community’s thanks to all those involved for rebuilding this society and acts as a reminder to reflect on the difficulties they face – past and present.
