Housing benefit for two homes

If you move from one rented property to another rented property you can be eligible for housing benefit for both of them, but only if your liability for rent on both properties could not reasonably have been avoided.

It can only be awarded for the period after you have moved into your new address and can only be awarded for a maximum of four weeks from the date you move.

I receive Universal Credit can I apply?

You cannot receive a two homes payment if you are receiving Universal Credit. The two homes payment is only payable to customers that receive housing benefit at the address they have moved out of.

What happens if I do not pay rent at my new address?

If you move from a rented property to a non-rented property you are entitled to housing benefit for the property you have left but only if the rental charge on the old property could not reasonably have been avoided.

I have not moved into my new address yet but I'm liable for rent can I apply for two homes?

No, the two homes payment can only be awarded for the period after you have moved into your new address and can only be awarded for a maximum of four weeks from the date you move.
