What is housing benefit
Housing benefit is a means-tested benefit that helps towards the cost of rent for people who are on a low income.
Who can claim
You will need to be of pension age and have a liability to pay rent for your home. It does not matter if your landlord is the council, a housing association or a private individual or company, you can still claim.
People of working age who are living in temporary or specified accommodation can also claim. However further details about this are available when making a claim.
We do not normally pay housing benefit to a tenant who is living with a member of their immediate family and paying them rent.
