Food business inspections
We carry out food hygiene inspections at local food businesses and give each one a risk rating. The frequency of an inspection is determined by the risk rating of the last inspection. It could be as often as every 6 months for higher risk premises, to every 3 years for those premises rated as low risk.
Our Inspectors have the right to enter and inspect food premises at all reasonable hours. They do not have to make an appointment and will usually come without notice.
The inspection may vary depending on the type of business you operate, however, the main criteria you will be assessed on will be:
- the type of food you produce
- the number of customers affected
- food hygiene practices
- the standard of structure and cleaning in the premises
- confidence in management – including training, record keeping and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)
To register as a food business, you will need to complete the form available on the Register a food business webpage.
Food Service Plan
We have a ‘Food Service Plan’, which sets out how Melton Borough Council intends to provide an effective food safety service that meets the requirements of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) Framework Agreement. It covers the functions carried out by authorised officers of the Food Safety Team under the various pieces of food safety legislation in England and ties in with the corporate priorities for the Council. The latest version of the plan can be found below.
