Our climate change strategy

The Council has developed the Climate Change Strategy 2024-2036 to set out how as a community we can work together to tackle climate change across Melton borough. It sets a framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and for making the borough more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

The Strategy is led by Melton Borough Council; however it is a collective document for the whole community. We will work with partners to use the strategy to influence, encourage and engage with the community and other organisations to bring forward climate change initiatives.

You can view the Climate Change Strategy in the download panel at the bottom of this page.

How was the strategy formed?

The Climate Change Strategy is led by Melton Borough Council; however it is a collective document, formed using officer knowledge alongside public feedback from multiple consultations and engagement events.

Climate Change Consultation 2022

In Spring 2022, we launched a Climate change consultation alongside multiple engagement events, with the aim of gaining a greater understanding of communities and stakeholders views on climate change and how they want us to work with them in the future. This involved an online survey, consultation events with young people, a market stall in Melton Mowbray and connecting with various stakeholders across the borough. We were keen to get a variety of views to better understand how we should tackle the issues as both a council and as a community.

The results of the consultation in 2022 were used to draft a Climate Change Strategy.

Draft Climate Change Strategy Consultation

Once we drafted our Climate Change Strategy we went out for further consultation with the public, between November 2023 to January 2024.

As part of the consultation we wanted to hear your views on the document and see whether it was fit for purpose in the local area to set out how people can come together to tackle climate change and protect Melton borough for future generations.

A summary of the consultation results has been published on haveyoursay.melton.gov.uk.

An Equalities Impact Assessment has been undertaken as part of the consultation process and can be downloaded and read in full at the bottom of the page.

Future engagement

We have continued to engage with various community groups since the first consultation ended. We have attended events, provided advice and support and created networks for people to connect with one another on the issues and topics associated with climate change.
