Electoral Register
To be able to vote you need to be on the Electoral Register.
What is the Electoral register
The Electoral Register is a list of all the residents who are eligible to vote in an election. There are two versions of the electoral register - the full version and the open register. You can opt out of the open register, if you wish to do so.
The register is updated at the start of each month, with exceptions when an election is called. You can view the voter registration dates, which details the deadlines to get your details on the register each month.
The full register contains the names and addresses of residents in the Borough who have registered and are eligible to vote. If your name is not on the register, you will not be able to vote at any elections.
The register is used for:
- Elections and referendums
- The Jury Service
- Credit reference
- Prevention and detection of crime
The full register is not available to view online as only certain people or organisations can have copies, which they can only use for specified purposes. Details of others who can have copies of the full register, and what they can use it for, are given in The Representation of the People (England and Wales)(Amendment) Regulations 2002 (No 1871) - (see below)
A copy of the full register can be viewed, by appointment only, from 9am - 4pm, Monday - Friday at:
Melton Borough Council
Parkside
Station Approach
Burton Street
Melton Mowbray
LE13 1GH
Please email electionservices@melton.gov.uk if you would like to arrange an appointment.
If you wish to opt out of the open register, please see our Opt-out of the open register page.
The open register leaves out the names and addresses of people who have asked for them to be excluded from that version of the register. The open register can be bought by anyone who asks for a copy and they may use it for any purposes.

Online Open Register Searches
It is possible to search electoral registers using online commercial organisations. However, these organisations are only entitled to be supplied with information on the open register.
You may find that your name appears during an online search even if you have told us that you do not want your name on the open register. This can happen if your details were passed on to the commercial organisation before you told us that you did not want to be on the open register. It may be that you have been living at your address since before 2002; when there was only one version of the register.
You should contact the commercial organisation if you want your name removed from their online search because your name is not on the up-to-date open register.
