Melton Borough Council appoint new Mayor at the annual meeting of the Council

Mayor Siggy Atherton With Deputy Mayor Jim Adcock And Partners

A new Mayor for the borough has been elected following the annual meeting of the Council on Thursday 15 May 2025.

The Council appointed Councillor Siggy Atherton as the Mayor for the coming year, who announced that the Mayor’s Charities would be Pepper’s A Safe Place, and Melton Mencap. Councillor Ian Atherton will be supporting her as the Mayor's Consort.

Councillor Jim Adcock was elected as Deputy Mayor, supported by the Deputy Mayoress Kate Adcock.

Outgoing Mayor, Councillor Tim Webster, stated that “I wish to thank all the people, organisations and businesses of Melton who continue to welcome and support the role of Mayor in our Community. The Mayoress and I have found it hugely rewarding experience and we have been grateful for the opportunity to meet so many interesting people and visit such a variety of places.”

Cllr Siggy Atherton, The Mayor of Melton, added “Anyone who knows me, knows I am very passionate about Melton and will champion Melton wherever possible to my best ability. I wear these chains with great pride and I pledge to uphold the dignity and honour that this position demands.”

During the meeting the Members agreed the Council’s Constitution, including some proposed amendments to ensure appropriate schemes of delegation and the Constitution is kept up to date.

The size and structure of Cabinet has remained unchanged, however Councillor Steve Carter and Councillor Pat Cumbers swapped roles, with Cllr Carter joining Cabinet, and Cllr Cumbers becoming the Chair of the Licensing Committee. The current membership is set out below. The Leader and Deputy Leader are due to review the portfolio responsibilities with the cabinet over the coming days:

  • Councillor Pip Allnatt, Leader of the Council.
  • Councillor Margaret Glancy, Deputy Leader of the Council.
  • Councillor Sharon Butcher.
  • Councillor Sarah Cox.
  • Councillor Steve Carter.

At the meeting, Councillors were also appointed as Chairs and Vice Chairs to several Committees of the Council including:

  • Councillor Leigh Higgins, Chair of Audit & Standards Committee.
  • Councillor James Mason, Vice Chair of Audit & Standards Committee.
  • Councillor Pat Cumbers, Chair of Licensing Committee (Taxi and General) and Licensing Committee (Alcohol and Gambling).
  • Councillor Simon Lumley, Vice Chair of Licensing Committee (Taxi and General) and Licensing Committee (Alcohol and Gambling).
  • Councillor Allen Thwaites, Chair of Planning Committee.
  • Councillor James Mason, Vice Chair of Planning Committee.
  • Councillor Mike Brown, Chair of Scrutiny Committee.
  • Councillor Allen Thwaites, Vice Chair of Scrutiny Committee.  
  • Councillor Pip Allnatt, Chair of the Employment Committee.
  • Councillor Margaret Glancy, Vice Chair of the Employment Committee.
