Local residents can look forward to new tennis courts at Melton Sports Village in Melton Mowbray, as work gets underway to improve the existing facilities.

The refurbishment scheme, which will see £110,000 invested in the new courts, is a collaborative effort between Melton Mowbray Tennis Club, Sport England, the Lawn Tennis Association and Melton Borough Council. The planned improvements will provide an upgraded and improved facility for all users.

Construction work is due to start on 22 February and will include: a new sub-base, an artificial clay surface, new outer fencing and new tennis posts and nets.

The refurbished courts will be available to hire for member and non-members alike through the Melton Mowbray Tennis Club.  The new facility aims to encourage residents of all ages and ability levels to enjoy using the facilities by offering a mix of pay and play sessions, taster sessions, and coaching sessions as well as Melton Mowbray Tennis Club member usage.

Cllr Alan Pearson, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities said:

“We are delighted that works to improve the tennis courts at Melton Sports Village are getting underway. This is part of the Council’s commitment to invest in improving our sporting facilities within the borough. We encourage residents to use the new facilities when they are able to open and reap the health and wellbeing benefits gained from engaging in physical activity.

“The partnership approach between Melton Borough Council and Melton Mowbray Tennis Club has been vital to ensuring these works can take place. We will continue to work closely with Melton Mowbray Tennis Club to ensure that the new tennis courts are inclusive to our residents and will benefit the entire community.”

Justin Horobin, Chairman of Melton Mowbray Tennis Club said:

“This is a wonderful achievement for the club and the town, and will ensure that we have a superb playing surface, on a par with anything in the county. I would like to thank Melton Borough Council, MMTC committee members, playing members and local business sponsors for your support on this journey over the last 3 years.

The improved facilities will allow the club to consolidate and bring new members into the club, as well as build upon the relationships with local schools, organisations and the public to allow more people of all ages and abilities to participate in Tennis.
