Residents invited to take part in Volunteer Week

Volunteers Litter Picking In Park

Residents across the borough are encouraged to take part in community activities during National Volunteer Week. As part of this national initiative, Melton Borough Council is organising two events; a volunteer fair and Melton Clean Up, to celebrate and encourage volunteering within the borough.

Volunteering offers a multitude of benefits, both for individuals and communities, creating a ripple effect of positivity and growth. This is especially true for the two upcoming events, which aim to address critical issues within the community, offering a unique opportunity for individuals to contribute their skills and passion towards things that can positively impact our community and environment.

The first event will be a Volunteer Fair at Parkside on Friday, June 7 between 1pm and 6pm, hosted by the council. This event offers residents a chance to interact with various volunteer organisations, explore how they can contribute their time to meaningful causes throughout the borough, and discover how their specific skills can benefit the community. There will be a range of opportunities to fit individual interests and time availability.

Stallholders will showcase a range of opportunities which range from working with local charities, to working with animals and/or children. Refreshments will also be available for those who attend. If you work for an organisation that uses volunteers, the council would love to hear from you. Book a stall, see how you can take part or to share information with people who may be interested in volunteering, email hcdadmin@melton.gov.uk or book a stall online at: www.melton.gov.uk/VolunteerFair. Organisations are also welcome to provide promotional materials that can be displayed at the event, if they are unable to attend.

Following this, Melton Borough Council is hosting Melton Clean Up in collaboration with Melton Lions and Melton Wombles on Sunday 9 June. Everyone is welcome to join in at 12 Noon until 3pm for a collective effort in litter picking and tidying up the area. This family-friendly event will be taking place at Melton Country Park, by the Visitor Centre, where you can check in and collect the equipment to take part. It is recommended that participants wear suitable clothes, and anyone that would like to take part that is under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Volunteering is an excellent way to develop new skills and gain valuable experience. Whether it's improving communication and teamwork abilities, learning new technical skills, or gaining insights into social and environmental issues, these events offer a hands-on approach to personal and professional development. Participants in volunteering often discover new competencies that can be applied in various aspects of their life, including their careers.

Residents that are considering volunteering on an ongoing basis or would like to help clean up Melton are encouraged to come along to one of these events to meet like-minded individuals who are passionate about their community. There is no need to book onto either event, just turn up.
