Become a member of our Landlord Assurance Board

We are committed to delivering high quality homes and landlord services and positive outcomes for our council tenants across the borough. We have recently established a Landlord Assurance Board and we are looking for up to three tenant board representatives to join us.

What is the landlord assurance board?

The Landlord Assurance Board provides an opportunity for council officers, councillors and tenants to work together, with a focus on high quality homes and accountable landlord services.

It has been developed to ensure collective awareness and visibility on important matters, such as regulatory compliance, financial resilience, risk management and performance on matters relating to being an effective landlord.

Why join the landlord assurance board?

We are invested in listening to our tenants and using your feedback, both positive and negative, to shape the decisions we take and the services we deliver to you.

As a member of the Landlord Assurance Board, you will share a tenant's perspective during the meetings and help us to shape our services as a landlord. Every voice and view within the board matters, and you will be able to contribute to the discussions, ask questions to seek assurance on key areas of work, and to suggest changes or improvements.

The Landlord Assurance Board must retain a focus on the quality of homes and the wellbeing and empowerment of tenants at all times. Therefore, as a board member, you will need to have a particular interest in the Council’s commitment and ability to deliver high quality homes and landlord services across our 1800 homes to tenants within the borough.

What does the role involve?

Landlord Assurance Board meetings take place on a quarterly basis. They are hybrid meetings, enabling participants to attend in person or remotely as required. Membership will be an initial term of three years.

Board members will need to prepare for each meeting, by completing the relevant reading.

As a board member you will also need to be able to work well with other and, as you will be sharing a tenant's perspective, it is important you are able to reflect on things that are working well, areas that are not working quite so well and things that may need to change or improve.

The role should be fulfilling and productive and we will support you to be involved in a way that suits you, including provide access to any training and support you require to complete the role.

The terms of reference, role profile and code of conduct for the Landlord Assurance Board can be found in the download panel at the bottom of this page.

Can friends or family of tenants be on the Landlord Assurance Board?

As you will be sharing a tenant's perspective, to be a board member you do have to be a current tenant of Melton Borough Council. Friends and family members of tenants would not qualify for the role.

Do I need qualifications or experience?

As you will be sharing a tenant's perspective, it is important that you have:

  • good communication skills
  • an understanding of housing and community issues.
  • an understanding of the regulatory framework within which our housing services operate.
  • the ability to absorb key information and to positively question and challenge.
  • the ability to weigh up issues and make balanced, reasonable and proportionate judgements.
  • the ability to focus on the “bigger picture” and advocate for all tenants.

However, you do not need any qualifications to apply to be a member of the Landlord Assurance Board. We will support you to be involved in a way that suits you, and we will provide access to training and support.

Is there a cost?

There is no direct cost for being a member of the board.

However, you may incur travel costs. You will be reimbursed for direct costs attributed to attending meetings or training (to be agreed in advance with the Assistant Director for Housing Management). A package of training will be available and the costs of this will be paid for by the council.

Other ways to get involved as a tenant

The Landlord Assurance Board is only one of the ways in which we engage with our tenants.

Our tenants voices are important to us and help us to ensure that the services we deliver are right for our tenants. If you would like to get more involved but are not sure this is the role for you, you could choose to join our Your Choice Group or our Email Panel instead.
