With a clear understanding of the value of working collaboratively, you will play a key role in ensuring effective, efficient and high-quality services to maximise environmental quality, taking a planned and evidence-based approach to support ongoing investment, service delivery and improvement options for our green and open spaces. You will be confident to enable a best practice approach for the spaces and places that we know are valued by our residents and visitors. 

About you 

The ideal candidate will need to be enthusiastic, self-motivated and well organised.  You will need to have a good track record of delivery and coordination of work across multiple teams to achieve outcomes.

As our green and open spaces officer, you will need to be able to support and influence the work of colleagues and stakeholders, ensuring that the council can make best use of its resources at all times. You will need to be able to communicate clearly and effectively, ensuring that there is clarity arising from your work and leadership to support service delivery across our council teams to support a clear vision for Pride in our Place. In this role you will need to be able to problem solve and working across teams to navigate uncertain or ambiguous situations.  

You will need to be able to develop evidence and data led reports, analysis and plans that guide and support financially viable maintenance and investment planning and to accurately assess both opportunities and risks. You will also be confident to contribute to IT systems that will make it easier to have a single view of investment, maintenance and inspection arrangements.  

This role reports directly to the Waste and Environmental Services Manager but to be most effective, the postholder will need to be comfortable to work as part of a cross-directorate approach in order to deliver positive outcomes to meet the council’s commitments to pride in place and to ensure a joint approach to problem solving and achieving outcomes.  

About the role

Some key duties will include:

  • Ensuring that ‘green assets’ (including cemeteries, closed churchyards, country park, green spaces, play areas, street furniture, tree maintenance) are logged and mapped and maintained accurately within a central system alongside corporate and housing assets to support a whole council view of assets owned and maintained by the council.  
  • Leading the development and implementation of clear maintenance and management plans and monitoring / inspection schedules for council owned and maintained green and open spaces and associated ‘green assets’ across the borough to support work planning and programming, resource allocation and budget management.  
  • Reviewing operating and management arrangements for council run allotment sites and to support the development of options for secure and sustainable operations in the future. 
  • Leading and coordinating the council’s Pride in Place cross departmental group; ensuring information and updates are provided in support of the objectives of the group and that a collaborative approach is taken to matters or initiatives relating to environmental quality / pride in place within the resources and capacity available.   
  • To lead self-assessment and application to obtain green flag status for Melton Country Park, and to ensure that effective arrangements are in place to maintain accreditation.  
  • To be proactive in supporting internal and external communications about activities, projects and initiatives that contribute positively to pride in place including annual review and update on outcomes achieved.
